Patient Informed Consent
It is important that patients are well informed about the different aspects of their planned surgery. This is a prerequisite in modern concepts such as
shared decision making in the treatment of a patient
According to international quality criteria, verification (that the necessary information has been given to the patient) needs to take place by co-signing a consent document by the patient and the caregiver before the surgery takes place.
Below is an example of such a consent document.
Additional Information
There are different possibilities of giving the patient additional information about their surgery, a classic example is paper flyers, a modern way is an information website such as this one. Whatever mode is chosen it is important that the patient and family be well informed about the different aspects of their procedure.
